Getting the conversion wrong between these systems means either a material shortage that halts work or overpurchase that erodes margins.
One brass = 100 CFT = 2.832 cubic meters. This single conversion resolves most site-level procurement confusion. For cement, the convention is 50 kg per bag = 1.226 CFT loose volume. Key Construction Unit Relationships
Volume: 1 cubic meter = 35.315 CFT = 0.35315 brass. 1 brass = 100 CFT = 2.832 m³. These are the two conversions every site engineer and contractor should have memorised.
Cement: 1 bag = 50 kg = 1.226 CFT loose volume. For a 1:2:4 concrete mix, approximately 6.5 bags cement, 0.43 m³ sand, and 0.86 m³ aggregate are needed per cubic meter of concrete — values vary with mix design and aggregate type.
Sand and aggregate: Quoted in brass or CFT at local suppliers. Engineering BOQ uses cubic meters. Always add 10–15% wastage to calculated quantities for site ordering.
CPWD and State PWD Standards
The Central Public Works Department Schedule of Rates (CPWD DSR) is the reference document for government construction project cost estimation. It lists rates in both metric and traditional units depending on the work category. The National Building Code of India (NBC 2016) uses SI units exclusively for structural design.
For private construction, BIS IS:1200 series provides the method of measurement for all building works — earthwork, concrete, brickwork, plaster, and finishes. Most items are in square meters or cubic meters, though CFT remains in use for timber and some finishing items.
