Measurements
Every Indian Unit. Every State. Instantly Converted.

Standard unit conversion covers the everyday measurements that appear across medicine, engineering, education, international trade, and daily life. India officially uses SI (metric) units under the Legal Metrology Act 2009, but imperial units remain common in signage, casual speech, and equipment specifications from older or international sources.

Height in India is often expressed in feet and inches in everyday conversation, despite centimeters being the medical standard. Body weight is discussed in kilograms clinically but in pounds informally among English speakers. Temperature is Celsius in all official contexts but Fahrenheit persists on some older thermometers. These standard converters resolve the everyday friction between systems.

SI Units — India's Official Standard

India is a signatory to the Metre Convention (1875) and has used the International System of Units (SI) as its official measurement standard since the Standards of Weights and Measures Act 1976. The seven SI base units are: meter (length), kilogram (mass), second (time), ampere (current), kelvin (temperature), mole (amount), and candela (luminous intensity). The Legal Metrology Act 2009 updated the 1976 legislation and extended coverage to pre-packaged goods labelling. Non-metric units in commercial transactions are an offence under this Act — with exemptions for specific traditional units still used in official land records and commodities.

Common Standard Conversions

The most used standard conversions in India: 1 kg = 2.2046 pounds. 1 mile = 1.609 km. 1 foot = 30.48 cm = 12 inches. 1 meter = 3.281 feet. °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. For height: 5 feet = 152.4 cm. 6 feet = 182.88 cm. 170 cm = 5 feet 6.9 inches. For weight: 70 kg = 154.3 pounds. 100 kg = 220.5 pounds.

Standard Units in Education

CBSE Science curriculum from Class 6 onward covers SI units and metric conversions. NCERT Physics and Chemistry textbooks use SI exclusively. Competitive examinations including NEET, JEE, and UPSC test unit analysis (dimensional analysis) as part of basic scientific reasoning. Practical unit conversion skills — converting clinical measurements, reading imported equipment specs, or calculating international shipping weights — appear in professional aptitude tests for engineering, medical, and management roles.
